Spring Break Tour 2015 Takes HGC to the American South
Good news for HGC alumni, family, friends, and fans living in the southeastern United States—the Harvard Glee Club is headed your way!
In just a few short weeks, Glee Clubbers will be shaking off the snow and ice of New England, trading their L.L. Bean boots for flip-flops, and heading out on an exciting tour with concert appearances in Georgia, South Carolina, and Florida.
Tour manager, Alex Rohe ’17 reports that a few details still need to be worked out, but the tour will definitely begin with a Saturday, March 14 concert at Christ Church in Savannah, GA. Sunday in Savannah will find HGC making a series of brief appearances at local churches before heading to Charleston, SC on Monday where HGC will perform at The Unitarian Church of Charleston and pay homage at the grave-site of Samuel Gilman, who penned the original lyrics to “Fair Harvard.” Then it’s off to Florida for concerts in Orlando, Tampa, and Naples.
More information, including a detailed itinerary will be posted on the HGCF website soon. Please check often to make sure you have the latest information on where the Glee Club will be!
Meet HGC’s New Manager
It’s January, and that means the new management team takes over at HGC. This year, we welcome William “Billy” Gardner ’17 to the post of General Manager of the Harvard Glee Club.
Hailing from a small town in rural Oklahoma, Billy studies sociology, global health and health policy and is involved in a variety of organizations related to health, music, public policy, and international development. Billy brings a set of core beliefs which include equality, responsibility, dedication, and excellence, and aims to promote these in all aspects of life and work. He operates with a philosophy centered around public service and believes in the value of giving back and creating lasting, transformational change.
Billy says, “I’m incredibly excited for the opportunity to serve the Glee Club as General Manager this year alongside a team of very talented and driven managers. Going off the momentum of the outgoing management team, we’re excited to continue work on a variety of projects, including branding and marketing of the chorus, internal development and membership recruitment in the fall, and our soon-to-be-announced international tour in 2017. I’m very thankful for all of the support we receive from our alumni and look forward to working with the Foundation in the coming year.”
Keep Calm and Let Us Go Singing!
The Foundation’s 2014-2015 Annual Fund launched last month to tremendous response. More than 165 HGC alumni, family, friends, and fans made gifts just during the month of December alone. In addition to our many loyal continuing donors, we also heard from a good number of first-time donors and donors we hadn’t heard from in quite a little while. (It must be those magic words, “Cantantes licet usque eamus!”)
We so appreciate each and every gift, of whatever amount. Your gifts to the Foundation are making it possible for the Foundation to make a $15,000 grant to the Glee Club this year in support of their Spring Break Tour and their many other exciting projects and activities.
Veteran Holden Voice Program Faculty Member to offer Free Workshop to Harvard Singers
On Saturday, January 31, join Sarah Whitten, eleven-year member of the Holden Voice Faculty and 500-hour CYT (Certified Yoga Teacher) for a special hour-long workshop, “Three Secrets to Your Best Sound.”
According to Sarah, the top three concerns of most singers are: 1) “My voice gets tired during rehearsals or in performance,” 2) “I can’t hit the high notes easily,” and 3) “My shoulders and neck hurt.” And to add insult to injury, the 4th is, “I get nervous when I perform.”
Offered on Saturday, January 31 from 2:00-3:00pm in Holden Chapel, Sarah’s innovative workshop normally costs $35 per singer. But she is offering this special January workshop free of charge for all Harvard students, alumni, and affiliates.
You asked for it and we heard you! HGC alumni frequently do amazing things; from creating Oscar-nominated animated films, to publishing articles and books, to undertaking insane acts like singing a performance of Bach’s St. Matthew Passion and running the Boston Marathon IN THE SAME WEEKEND! And some of you have asked the Foundation to find a way to celebrate these amazing alumni and their accomplishments.
“Alumni News!” is a new tab on the Home page of the Foundation’s website. There you will find brief articles about what your fellow HGC alumni are up to along with photos and links to learn more. If you have some news to share, send it along to AlumniNews@hgcfoundation.org. Please keep your news item as brief as possible and consider including photo and/or a link for those who want to learn more. We’ll do our best to keep it current.
