Harvard Glee Club Foundation: Long may continue our unity and joy!
Sept. 2014 e-Bulletin
This year marks the 115th Harvard-Yale Football Concert and the 131st Playing of The Game and we’re celebrating with a weekend of glee and good humour! We’re kicking off the Harvard-Yale Football Weekend Friday evening, November 21st, with a Pre-Concert HGC Alumni & Friends Dinner in the Private Dining Room of John Harvard’s Brewery & Ale House in Harvard Square. Then, it’s off to Sanders Theatre for one of the most beloved of Glee Club traditions, the Harvard-Yale Football Concert. Make sure to wear your Glee Club tie and plan to join the men of the Glee Club on stage to raise the roof of Sanders Theatre with the singing of the traditional Football Songs. On Saturday, November 22nd, we’ll gather at Harvard Stadium in a special Harvard Glee Club Alumni Section to cheer the Crimson on to an eighth straight victory over the Bulldogs. Don’t miss out, register today (registrations for the dinner and tickets to The Game are limited and will be available on a first-come, first-served basis). More information and a chance to reserve your spot, are on the Foundation’s website.
HGC Launches Agressive Recruiting Campaign
HGC launched an aggressive recruiting campaign this year… with some great new marketing materials and a ton of renewed energy. Marketing Manager, Eduardo Cabral (seen on the right in this photo) and others on the HGC Management team spent many hours working to reach both undergraduates and graduate students to round out this year’s roster of singers. When all was said and done, this past Sunday evening saw a total of 25 men “sung in” as the newest members of the Harvard Glee Club. With a full roster of 55 singers, this year’s group promises to do us all proud.
Special Invitation from the NAT ’64 Tour Members
The men and women of the Harvard Glee Club & Radcliffe Choral Society 1964 North American Tour will be presenting a special concert on Sunday, September 28 to mark the 50th Anniversary of their tour. HGC & RCS alumni/ae are especially invited to come and celebrate this milestone anniversary. The Reunion Concert will begin promptly at 11:00am in St. John’s Memorial Chapel of Episcopal Divinity School. Under the direction of Dr. Isaiah “Jack” Jackson and Dr. Sandra “Sandy” Jarrett, the concert will include a sampling of the repertoire from the 1964 tour, including works by Barber, Poulenc, Brahms, and Faure as well as folk songs and HGC and RCS standards. The concert is free and open to the public. More information is available on the Foundation’s website.
HGC Continues Close Relationship to Doc’s Ashmont Parish
Before being appointed Organist & Choirmaster at Memorial Church in 1910–later to become the first conductor of the Harvard Glee Club in 1919–Archibald T. “Doc” Davison served as Organist & Choirmaster of the Parish of All Saints in Ashmont. In recent years, the Harvard Glee Club has developed a close relationship with the Choir of Men & Boys at Doc’s old parish through shared concerts and the creation of the Archibald T. Davison Fellowship. The Davison Fellowship, funded in part by the Harvard Glee Club Foundation, places a current Harvard Glee Club singer in the All Saints Choir of Men & Boys to serve as tutor, mentor, and positive role model for the young singers in the choir.
This year, HGC continues that historic connection by traveling to Ashmont on Sunday, November 9 to appear with the Choir of Men & Boys in the celebration of the Solemn Mass at 10:00am and later at an afternoon concert at 2:00pm. HGC alumni are invited to come out to hear HGC and the Choir of Men & Boys as they celebrate their shared history and the musical legacy of Doc Davison.
