~And a good time was had by all!~
Reflections on the HGCF Annual Sing

My time in the Harvard Glee Club was very special to me for two reasons: the superlative musical experience and the great people and close friendships I made. The alumni sings are a great opportunity to renew both, and so I make a point of attending as many of them as I can, even though I now live in the Washington, D.C. area.
I’m always amazed how an essentially random group of HGC alums that spans a period of decades, brought together momentarily with no preparation other than having once been a member of the group, can out-perform every other men’s or mixed chorus I’ve ever been a member of! It’s remarkable the degree to which the singing part of the alumni sing re-creates that magical HGC sound that just envelopes you and makes you remember why you love to sing. And of course it’s also fun to revisit those HGC favorites like Lowlands and Down By The Salley Gardens that we all enjoyed so much.
The fellowship aspect is equally enjoyable. It’s a lot of fun to meet Gleeks (can we still use this term??) from other eras, some who sang under other conductors, and trade anecdotes about concerts and tours past over the delicious post-sing meal. It’s great to see how similar our experiences often were, even decades apart. And of course it’s especially wonderful to reconnect with those men whose friendship was such an important part of the HGC experience. Often we retreat after dinner to a local tavern and re-live many of our social activities, sometimes even including the actual games that were involved 🙂
The alumni sing is really like an annual HGC reunion, and so the more of us who attend, the more fun it is because the more people each of us will be able to reconnect with. I hope to see as many of you there as possible next year!
